Dartmouth Jail receives funding for correctional classes
The Healey-Driscoll administration announced they are awarding the Bristol County Sheriff’s office $63,208 for welding education and training as a part of a grant for career and technical education in correctional facilities.
“These grants will help give individuals access to relevant career and technical skills while in custody,” said Governor Maura Healey. “We want returning citizens to be prepared to join the workforce on day one, earning family-sustaining wages and reducing recidivism.”
The Dartmouth jail is one of four jails in the state receiving funds from the $234,000 grant to further education within the jails. The grant comes from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Students in these programs receive a certificate of credentials in the program that promotes collaboration between correctional facilities and local employers.
“We are strengthening our workforce statewide by offering technical training opportunities to individuals who have historically faced barriers to employment,” said Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. “These grants offer training and experience for important industries across the state.”
