Here’s what the Council on Aging has planned for November

November is here and the Dartmouth Council on Aging will be hosting a full schedule of events/activities. Here’s what’s coming up this month.

Introduction to ukulele

On Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m., the Center will host a preview of its upcoming beginner ukulele class in December.

Walk-ins are welcome.

Turkey Dinner with Heart to Homes Meals

Holiday meals will be distributed Monday, Nov. 22 at 1 p.m.

What is Options Counseling?

On Nov. 17 at 1 p.m., the Center will host a free program where counselors will work with families and caregivers to meet individualized goals.

Walk-ins are welcome.

Make your own seasoning

Sample and create your own custom seasonings with Therapy Gardens. Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. Pre-registration required.

Gentle yoga with Jane Hoffman

Beginning Nov. 16, the Center will host weekly yoga sessions which combine dance moves with the typical positions. Classes will be held Tuesdays at 1 p.m. Cost is $5.

New resistance bands with Larry

Starting Nov. 17, the Center will host a group class focused on stretching and balance. Classes will be held Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Bands are included for $2. Walk-ins are welcome.

Creative arts Fridays

From Nov. 12 to Dec. 10, the Center will host classes going over the exploration of media, including drawing and painting.

The class, which will be held each Friday, is presented by the New Bedford Art Museum. Classes are held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Pre-registration required as space is limited.

Dance for Parkinson’s

The Center will host a weekly training session in which participants are empowered to explore movement and music. Sessions are free and will be held Mondays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Alzheimer’s support group

This professionally led group is for caregivers. Meetings are Nov. 2, 16, and 30. For more information, contact facilitator Carolyn Greany at (508) 304-4587.

YWCA Widow Person Program

The YWCA Widow Person Program will be returning to the Center on Nov. 4 and 18 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for newly widowed and 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for all others. Walk-ins are welcome.

Medicare 101

Turning 65? The Council on Aging will host a presentation on Medicare basics and the importance of enrollment periods for seniors on Nov. 15 at 4 p.m.

Book Club

The book club meets at 1 p.m. the second Monday of the month.  Pre-registration is required.

Classes at the Center 

Cam’s body awareness is held from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. Fridays. Cost is $2.

Gentle Yoga with Joan is held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Fridays. Cost is $5.  Walk-ins are welcome.

Strength and Flexibility with Larry will be held Mondays and Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. Larry will teach how to improve your muscle, bone strength, balance and flexibility with a full body routine using hand weights.This modified class is fit for all. 

Cost is $2. Walk-ins are welcome.

Tai Chi will be held Tuesdays from 9 to 10 a.m. Classes returned Aug. 10 as part of an eight week session. Cost is $30 for the eight weeks. Those who want to get a preview before doing more tai chi are encouraged to drop in for a free class.

Games

Bridge will be held Mondays from noon to 3 p.m. Cribbage will happen Tuesdays from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mah Jongg is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Mondays and Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m., the Center will offer billiards lessons. Classes are limited to four people. To register, call the Center.

Hearing clinic with At Home Healthcare

Hearing evaluations and hearing aid checks will be held Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Legal advice

For other legal advice, the COA will host consultations with elder law attorney Brandon Walecka on Nov. 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. by appointment only.
