How to dispose of real Christmas trees, fake trees and wreaths
As the holiday season winds down, Dartmouth residents have several options for disposing of real Christmas trees, artificial trees, and wreaths.
For SMART program participants real trees can be picked up curbside on the regular trash pick up day. This service will be provided the weeks of Jan. 5 and Jan. 12 and collection begins at 7 a.m. though this schedule may change depending on weather conditions.
Real trees can also be dropped off in the brush area at the Department of Public Works/Water Pollution Control Facility at 759 Russells Mills Road. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and from 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Saturdays. The facility is closed on Sundays and Wednesdays and a permit is required.
Before disposing real trees all ornaments, lights, stands and tinsel should be removed. The trees should not be placed in plastic bags.
The trees will be chipped and used as cover at the Crapo Hill Landfill.
Artificial trees and wreaths can be reused, shared or placed in the trash.
