Maria “Berta” Serpa, 75

Sep 21, 2020

Maria “Berta” Serpa, 75, of Dartmouth, passed away Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020 surrounded by family, at home, following a long illness. She was the wife of Jose A. Serpa, with whom she shared 50 years of marriage.

Born in Horta, Faial, daughter of the late Antonio and Maria DeLima, she came to the United States at the age of 21 and settled in New Bedford, before she retired in Dartmouth.

Mrs. Serpa worked at the Acushnet Company for several years.

Berta had an infectious laugh and always had a joking demeanor. She was always happy and loved spending time with family, especially at family gatherings. She loved going out dancing on Saturday night with the family. She enjoyed cooking and singing in the kitchen. She especially loved watching the boys play hockey and watching the girls dance, as well as spending “girl-time” with them.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Robert L. Serpa and his wife Angela; and Steve L. Serpa and his wife Carla, all of Dartmouth; her siblings, Natalia DaRosa of Dartmouth, Alice Pimental of Lisbon, Manuel Lima of Florida, Noelia Vasques of New Bedford and Fernando Lima of Georgia; four grandchildren, Koryn, Colby, Nathanial, and Kennedy Serpa; and several nieces and nephews. Berta also had a sister, Luiza DeLima, who passed away at a very young age.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association MA Chapter, 309 Waverly Oaks Rd., Waltham, MA 02452.
