Maria E. “Jean” (Medeiros) Mare’, age 87 of South Dartmouth, passed away Saturday morning at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of Virgilio Mare’, to whom she had been married for 62 years.

Born in St. Michael, Azores, a daughter of the late Abilio and Amelia (Moreira) Medeiros, she was a long time Dartmouth resident. Jean was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church, S. Dartmouth and was employed as a stitcher for 50 years at Elco Dress Company prior to her retirement in 1997.

Jean was a devout Catholic and her faith meant everything to her. Her special time of day was attending morning mass with her sister and her conversations with Father Rodney. Special moments spent with her grandchildren and family were sweetened by her wonderful desserts especially her pies. Later in life Jean enjoyed Sunday afternoon rides by the water with her daughter.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by a son, Nelson W. Mare’ and his wife Donna of Dartmouth; a daughter, Sandra Mare’ Benevides and her significant other Gary Martin of New Bedford; a brother, John Medeiros and his wife Nancy of AL; a sister, Mary Souza of Dartmouth; 4 grandchildren, Craig Mare’ and his significant other Stephanie; Matthew Mare’ and his wife Jocelyn; Brittany and Justin Benevides; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Liberal Medeiros and Odette Massa.

Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 9:00AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Road, S. Dartmouth, followed by her funeral mass at 10:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth Street, S. Dartmouth. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM.
