Opinion: To deny a chief of such talent a contract and the meeting majority approved salary is in no one’s best interest

To the editor:

During the annual meeting at the Dartmouth District 2 Fire Station, a firefighter assigned there rose to speak. He praised Chief Edgcomb saying he had full confidence in his decision making capabilities in crisis situations.

The Aug. 25 edition of Dartmouth Week illustrated how this firefighter’s confidence in Chief Edgcomb is based on substance, not rhetoric. The article described how the chief, in response to a call concerning an individual suffering cardiac arrest at Allens Neck Friends Meeting Clambake, flew out of the door in his personal cruiser while the fire and ambulance crews were loading up.

The chief, via his vast EMT experience, obviously knew every second counts in events of this nature. Edgcomb had his defibrillator working in no time and the man’s life was saved.

To deny a chief of such talent a contract and the meeting majority approved salary is in no one’s best interest. The next prudential meeting is Sept. 12 at 7 p.m.; please show up to support this man. Your presence counts!
