Registration open for library presentation, ‘Dining with Manet’

Jan 17, 2022

Sign-ups are open now for the Friends of the Dartmouth Libraries’ virtual presentation, “Dining with Manet: French Pastries & Picnics on the Lawn,” on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to noon.

Art historian and UMass Dartmouth Professor Emerita Dr. Memory Holloway will lead the presentation which will discuss the details of Édouard Manet’s painting, Luncheon on the Grass.

Manet painted the now-famous picture of his friends enjoying a picnic in 1863, but what did they eat? Was it a fantasy — food they longed to eat but could not afford — or commonplace?

Holloway will explore what this painting and another by Monet reveal about 19th-century French cooking and the distance between haute cuisine and domestic cuisine.

Registration is required at www.tinyurl.com/ManetDining. Audience members must sign up with an email address to receive a ZOOM code.
