On Nov. 27, the Board of Health reported 129 new cases this week — slightly down from 133 the week before for a total of 975 since the first numbers were counted in May.

The town has also seen 48 of its residents die from the illness since the start of the pandemic.

If trends continue, the town will likely pass 1,000 confirmed cumulative cases.

Leading up to Thanksgiving, officials were wary of an increase in cases following the holiday where friends and family tend to gather in close proximity.

Public Health Director Chris Michaud stressed that residents should take all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of transmission, reminding them that just 15 minutes of contact accumulated over 24 hours can transmit the virus.

“All of this is for the purpose of reducing transmission,” he said. “We have to reduce transmission. It’s out of control. We’re too high right now, and every week we’re going up.”

For the second week in a row, state data released listed Dartmouth at higher risk for contracting the virus due to a 14-day average daily case rate of over 53.3 per 100,000 people and a percent positive test rate of 6.53%.

Meanwhile, UMass Dartmouth has seen a slight increase in positive cases this past week with 37 — up from the 32 in the week ending Nov. 19.

According to data released Nov. 24, the positive cases represent just 2.21% of the nearly 1,700 tests taken by the university’s students and staff last week — much lower than the 6.53% positive test rate reported by the community of Dartmouth as a whole.

As of Nov. 28, Massachusetts has 42,549 estimated active Covid-19 cases, with 10,441 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths reported. There have been 119,551 cases in Bristol County since the start of the pandemic.
