Get the New Year off to a running start.

The Buzzards Bay Coalition is hosting a New Year’s Resolution Run from 9 to 10 a.m. at DNRT’s Destruction Brook Woods property.

This event is for anyone who made a resolution to run more, or who just wants to find a great place to meet fellow runners and enjoy the outdoors. The run will be three miles of occasionally steep woodland trails.

An opening night reception for the Whaling City Camera Club photography exhibit will be kicking off at the Dartmouth Cultural Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Guests will be able to enjoy the amazing images along with light refreshments and cast votes for the People's Choice Awards that evening.

The Dartmouth Cultural Center is located at the Olde Southworth Library on 404 Elm Street in Padanaram.

Look for Snowy Owls.

Search for the elusive snowy owl with Mass Audubon at their Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Participants will walk the beach loop trail looking for the migratory birds, covering about 2.5 miles of uneven terrain.

Bring binoculars and dress for winter. Limited to 12 adults. 

Cost: $18 for Mass Audubon members, $20 for non-members. Registration required. Register at massaudubon.org.

Learn about a Quaker sailor’s daring escapes.

The Dartmouth Historical and Arts Society will host a lecture by Robert Barboza on the story of Dartmouth Quaker Captain Cornelius Howland, who twice escaped from the clutches of the Royal Navy in the 18th century. 

Howland was 17 when his whaleship was captured by the Royal Navy in the West Indies. He escaped from a Scottish prison, but was again captured by a British man-of-war aboard another ship.

The lecture will be held from 2:30 - 4 p.m. at the Russells Mills Schoolhouse, 1205 Russells Mills Road.
