UMass Dartmouth to reinstate women’s tennis, swimming

May 19, 2021

UMass Dartmouth announced Tuesday the university has reinstated women’s tennis, along with women’s swimming and diving as varsity intercollegiate programs effective immediately.

The sports were among eight programs cut this past July including sailing, women’s equestrian, men’s golf, and men’s lacrosse, men’s tennis, and men’s swimming and diving.

According to a release, this is the “first of several anticipated changes” of an overall strategy to better align athletic participation opportunities for women with the female undergraduate population. The announcement noted that the decision to revisit its 2020 decision was due to changing demographics with the university’s student population.

The initial cuts came after multiple athletics program reviews over the past decade and forms part of the university’s long-term strategic plan. The reviews analyzed available resources, gender equity, enrollment, coaches, sports sponsorship trends, facilities, as well as strengths and weaknesses of athletics programs.

With the reinstatement, the university will work to address medical clearance, training, and scheduling contests contests for the upcoming fall season.

“We will move quickly over the next week to meet with student-athletes and staff to ensure our intent is clear,”  Athletic Director Amanda Van Voorhis said. “Our commitment to enhance the quality and increase the number participating in our tennis and swimming/diving programs is a priority.”
