Zoning Board discusses stormwater management for Sherbrooke Farms

On Monday, March 16 the Zoning Board of Appeals met to continue its discussion regarding the proposed Sherbrooke Farms development, which would be located on Old Westport Road and consist of 152 units — down from the initial 156.
Civil and stormwater logistics were the topic of conversation, which included how stormwater would be managed.
The project’s drainage system would consist of three underground infiltration systems and two open basins, which can control and treat stormwater.
Principal Engineer Damien Dmitruk explained how this drainage system would work.
This underground infiltration system would be located in three locations on the property and consist of half pipes. These half pipes would be placed on top of a stone bed and geotextile fabric, which would create a storage area for stormwater to collect in.
“The chambers themselves are just a storage volume to then allow the water to build up there,” Dmitruk said.
Water would build up in the space over time and create pressure, with the stormwater eventually leaching directly into the ground.
“There’s all those pre-treatment devices that catch oils and greases and everything like that prior to making their way to the system,” Dmitruk said.
This drainage system would take care of water that comes off the buildings, driveways and parking lot, Dmitruk said.
Zoning Board of Appeals Chair Michael Medeiros noted that the proposed underground infiltration system isn’t something that’s been invented for Sherbrooke Farms and is a process the board has heard about for other projects.
“We are meeting the standards and going above and beyond that which is required by the MassDEP stormwater standards,” Dmitruk said.
He added that the project would also have an operation and maintenance guideline plan that would require the drainage systems to be maintained and cleaned out on a regular basis.
The next meeting for Sherbrooke Farms will be held on Thursday, April 30, with the public hearing set to close on Thursday, May 14.
