‘Adopt’ your rubber ducks now for the annual Duck Derby

Jun 24, 2021

A yellow rubber duck could be your chance to win $5,000, among other prizes.

Allens Pond Wildlife Sanctuary is now accepting entries for the sanctuary’s 18th annual Duck Derby.

In advance of the derby, participants can sign up to “adopt” any number of rubber ducks. The ducks will be released into Allens Pond for the duck derby race on Aug. 19.

New to this year, The first duck to cross the finish line will net its winner a prize of their choice including either $5,000 in cash, dinner for 10 at the Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary of your choice, consultation on native plants, an animal encounter at one of Mass Audubon’s wildlife sanctuaries, or and “Osprey Adventure” with overnight accommodation at Allens Pond — which also involves a picnic breakfast and an Osprey Boat Tour with a biologist.

Runner-up prizes will be announced July 15.

Last year, more than 3,000 ducks set sail on Allens Pond for the big race.

All proceeds go to fund the Mass Audubon’s programs and research.

Prices are $10 to adopt one duck, $20 for two, $25 for three, $40 for five, $100 for 13, $125 for 18, and $200 for 26 ducks. The ducks can be named or purchased for someone else as a gift. Entries are due by 5 p.m. on Aug. 18.

You do not have to be present at the race to win.
