Game 6 and 7 Preview: Gatemen play a doubleheader against Firebirds
WAREHAM- The Wareham Gatemen (4-1) look to avenge their first loss of the season last night as they play a doubleheader today against the Orleans Firebirds (1-3) at Clem Spillane Field beginning at 4 p.m.
The Gatemen finally lost last night 2-0 as their four-game winning streak came to an end. The Gatemen were held to just one hit through seven innings and ended with only four for the night. Easton Lucas (Pepperdine) was the hard luck loser as he allowed one run over his three innings pitched.
3B Austin Shenton (FIU) was held out of the original lineup but came in to pinch hit and recorded one of the four Gatemen hits. He now has himself hits in four of the five games played this season and owns the second best batting average in the Cape Cod Baseball League at .462.
The Firebirds enter play today after losing yesterday to the Cotuit Kettleers 6-2 and two in a row overall. LHP Elijah Herrick (Duke) got knocked around in his season debut and took the loss for Orleans. He gave up six runs on four hits and two walks in his 2.1 innings.
Today’s matchup between Wareham and Orleans will be the first and second games of four played between the two teams this year. This will be the only time the Firebirds travel to Spillane Field. The Gatemen will travel to Eldredge Park in Orleans on June 22 and July 28 for the final two matchups.
RHP Joey Matulovich (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season today in the first game. Matulovich started the season opener for Wareham and took a no-decision in a game the Gatemen ultimately won 12-4. Matulovich pitched four scoreless and struck out four in that contest.
RHP Riley Ornido is the scheduled starter for Orleans in the first game. Ornido is a rising junior at the University of San Francisco and will be making his Cape season debut. Ornido had a fantastic sophomore season for the Dons as he posted a team best 2.58 ERA to go along with an 8-5 record. Opponents hit just .195 off Ornido this season.
RHP McKinley Moore is the scheduled starter for game two for Wareham. Moore is a rising junior out of the University of Arkansas Little Rock. This is Moore’s season debut for the Gatemen. This past year for the Trojans Moore threw in 12 games and posted an 8.71 ERA while going 0-4.
For the Firebirds, LHP Josh Hendrickson is the scheduled starter for game two. Hendrickson is originally from Australia and has one game under his belt already this Cape Cod season.
Hendrickson pitched one inning on June 12 in a 3-2 loss to Harwich. He surrendered one run, two hits, and a walk in his lone inning of work.
