Piping Plover Research Internship with the Lloyd Center

The Lloyd Center for the Environment has an opening for a seasonal research intern (1) for fieldwork relative to the endangered Piping Plover, on select beaches in Bristol County. Please read our Piping Plover page for further background about this longstanding project.
Summary of field duties:
Interns will assist with monitoring of pairs of plovers (and Least Terns where applicable), installation of fenced refuges, protection of some nests with metal predator exclosures, data collection regarding all plover nesting activity and factors (e.g. predation) impacting birds, other beach wildlife surveys as applicable, and educational interaction with beachgoers and beach staff about the work.
Interns will also have the opportunity to assist with other surveys and research projects such as water testing, and carry out tasks relative to upkeep of the Lloyd Center Nature Center.
Qualifications:
Academics
(1) Have completed a full year of college level academic courses,
(2) Be following a course of study with an emphasis on wildlife conservation or similar discipline
(3) Demonstrate interest in endangered species protection and research, and specifically ornithology.
* Prior shorebird conservation experience is highly desirable but will train the right applicant
Other attributes
1) Sufficient level of fitness for: walking in sand while carrying equipment, hammering posts and
digging predator exclosures, spending long days in field in hot and otherwise adverse weather.
2) Attentiveness to detail for maintaining season-long field notes.
3) Comfortable interacting with various members of beach community
5) Ability to work independently after instruction.
Internship timeframe:
Late May or early June until early August, start/end dates flexible.

Although currently closed for renovations, the main building will be open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays, and on Sundays, June - September, free of charge, when it reopens to the public.
