Albert Griek, 93

Apr 25, 2019

Albert Griek, 93, of South Dartmouth, passed away peacefully at home on April 22 with his loving wife, Virginia, by his side.

Born in Nantucket to the late Garbriella (Claus) and Albert Griek, Al moved to New Bedford when he was 16, where he attended New Bedford Vocational High School.

During the Korean War, Al served proudly in the US Army. Upon returning, he learned to be a canvas sail maker on the GI bill, first working for Crosby’s in Osterville, then Manchester Sails and Doyle Sails in Padanaram.

A legend in the sailing community, Al was always ready to repair a sail for the next day’s regatta, design and stitch dodgers, pedestal covers, cushions, winch and outboard covers – anything canvas a boater could dream up. And then there were the innumerable helm wheels hand stitched in leather.

Al was a former member of the New Bedford Yacht Club where he enjoyed volunteering on the Race Committee boat. An accomplished sailor, he cherished his 27-foot Catalina, Aureola, and spent many beautiful days sailing Buzzards Bay with his beautiful first mate, Virginia.

In addition, he was a master country western dancer and instructor where he met the love of his life line dancing.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Virginia (Medeiros) Griek. Step children, David Nizalowski; Julie Torre and beloved triplet grandchildren, Isabella, Marcus and Wyatt Torre; niece Eve O’Rouke, grandniece Heather Fury (Peter); grand nephew Steve Hunt (Sandy).

The family wishes to thank Dr. Gregory Nye and nurse Christine Leeman, VA of New Bedford; home health aide Theresa Luiz; and Southcoast Visiting Nurse Association.

Funeral arrangements are private in the care of Southeast Funeral Home, 93 Center Street, Easton.
