Bellingham man sentenced after assaulting a correctional officer
A 26-year-old Bellingham man who assaulted and threatened to kill a Bristol County House of Corrections correctional officer last September will serve up to four years in state prison.
Jared Roy pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court on March 3 to a two-count indictment charging him with assault and battery of a correctional officer and threats.
According to staff at the Bristol County District Attorney's office, Roy refused to go inside when asked during a correctional officer during a lockdown procedure at the Dartmouth jail on September 20, 2016.
"We are not going in until we get what we want,” Roy responded to the officer, according to staff. Roy then charged at the victim and punched him in the face, which caused the victim to fall to the ground. Roy jumped on top of the victim and continued the assault. Shortly after, other correctional officers came to the rescue, said staff.
The victim suffered a black eye and a concussion that kept him out of work for two weeks, said staff.
The next day, another correctional officer interviewed Roy about the incident. According to staff, Roy responded, “Would you be this calm when it’s you and me, and I have a piece of steel in my hands? That’s when I will [expletive] kill you.”
The defendant was serving a one year jail sentence for an assault and battery case at the time of this incident, said staff.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Patrick Driscoll, and the sentence was imposed by Superior Court Judge Raffi Yessayan.
