Centennial coins mark the ‘minted’ memories of town residents
Not everyone lives to see 100 years old.
And the Select Board will now be acknowledging those from Dartmouth who have reached or will reach this milestone in their lives.
Select Board Chair Shawn McDonald said, “I just thought it would be something a little bit different for the Board and community to honor those who make it to that tremendous number.”
The town will be adjusting its webpage to include a section for these announcements. McDonald said, “We would like to just offer a proclamation thanking them — celebrating their birthday,” but additionally, his company, North Dartmouth Properties, has donated a gift for these residents to receive.
Inspired by the Boston Post Cane, given to the oldest resident in town, McDonald developed a Dartmouth coin that celebrates 100 years. One one side of the coin, the Dartmouth town seal in encircled by the words, “Celebrating 100 Year,” and the other side features a “100” and the words, “Presented by the Dartmouth Select Board.”
The company donated 100 coins for residents to receive on their 100th birthday and it's theirs to keep.
Select Board member Heidi Silva Brooks said she appreciated how unlike the canes, the residents won’t have to return the coins.
She said, “This will be nice for the individual to receive and keep and for their family to have — to mark a century of life is pretty amazing.”
The Select Board will work with the town clerk and Council on Aging to identify individuals for the new program.
