Dartmouth intersection among 20 worst in area

Three Dartmouth intersections have been named among the top 100 most dangerous in southeastern Massachusetts, including one that ranked in the top 20.

The intersection of State Road and Faunce Corner Road/Old Westport Road placed 18th on the list, which was prepared by Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District, a regional planning agency serving 27 area communities.

State Road and Hathaway Road ranked 44th, while Faunce Corner Road and Cross Road was 71st.

The town’s worst intersection, State Road and Faunce Corner Road/Old Westport Road, was the site of 36 crashes between 2017 and 2019, according to Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District. Twenty of the crashes were property damage only, and 16 resulted in injuries.

Intersections at State Road and Hathaway Road and Faunce Corner Road and Cross Road each logged 35 accidents.

The intersections were also ranked by EDPO, or Equivalent Property Damage Only. This system uses frequency and severity of crashes to assign a score.

The higher this number is, the more dangerous the intersection is, according to Southeastern Regional Planning & Economic Development District

State Road and Faunce Corner Road/Old Westport Road had an EDPO of 33.33. State and Hathaway roads had a 27.67 EDPO ranking, while the EDPO for Faunce Corner Road and Cross Road was 23.67.
