Dartmouth’s Fire District No. 1 added a new firefighter to its ranks: Alexander Magalhaes.

The recruit recently completed his training at the State Fire Academy, graduating with 34 others on May 23 at Bridgewater State University.

“Now the work begins, Alex,” the Fire District said in a Facebook post.

The 240-hour long program teaches the essentials of fire and non-fire conditions, life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation and fire attack.

The Fire Academy, a division of the Department of Fire Services, has offered the program since 2003 and has graduated nearly 3,000 call and volunteer firefighter recruits.

“First responders are on the front lines of any crisis and these newest firefighters are needed now more than ever,” said Deputy State Fire Marshal and acting MFA director.Maribel Fournier. “The rigorous training they’ve completed provides them with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary to protect their communities safely and effectively.”
