Firefighters respond to two calls at same address on the same day

Mar 1, 2017

District No. 1 firefighters responded to two fires within three hours of each other at the same home on Rogers Street on February 28.

According to Chief Brad Ellis, firefighters were alerted of a house fire at 139 Rogers Street at 1:14 p.m. by the homeowner's teenage daughter, who discovered the fire.

Once on scene, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the right side of the building. Crews entered the home and found the fire in the basement using a thermal imaging camera, said Ellis.

The fire was contained to a small pile of books and files on the basement floor, and completely extinguished in under 20 minutes, Ellis said. The cause appears to be smoking related, he added.

After ensuring the fire was completely out, firefighters cleared out at around 2:40 p.m.

The second call came in around 3:54 p.m. for the same address.

Ellis said that the initial fire caused damage to electrical wiring, and the second fire appeared to result from a spark in an outlet, which ignited the insulation inside a wall. Crews were on scene for the second fire until 7 p.m.

The second fire caused extensive damage to an addition containing a kitchen and bathroom. Ellis said that extension will likely be a total loss.

No injuries were reported, Ellis said. The cause is still under investigation.

Ellis added that District No. 3 firefighters were also on scene to help put out the Rogers Street fires.

District No. 1 also responded to a cooking incident on Sun and Sea Drive that same evening.
