Former brass specialist Ian Flint named new music director

The Dartmouth Public School system has a new Director of Music after former brass specialist for the district Ian Flint was named to the position by Superintendent Bonny Gifford.

Although he was already something of a familiar face — having taught music in Dartmouth schools twice before — Gifford introduced Flint to the School Committee at a remote meeting on Monday night.

Flint will be replacing the longtime Director of Music Bill Kingsland, who for over a decade has led the Dartmouth High School marching band to excellence with multiple national championships, including the fourth consecutive win last year.

Kingsland is retiring at the end of the school year.

A Pennsylvania native and graduate of West Chester University, Flint noted at the meeting that his first job out of college was as the brass specialist in Dartmouth.

After a brief stint in Westport, he returned to Dartmouth for five years before accepting a position as head director supervising the music department at Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax.

“I’ve actually worked with the marching band in Dartmouth for all nine years that I’ve lived on the South Coast,” he said. “So I’m really familiar with the program. I’ve spent a long time working in all different aspects of the program.”

“We loved his interview. We loved the fact that he has worked for the Dartmouth public schools in prior years,” said Gifford as she introduced him to the committee.

“The first thing he said to me during my interview with him was that he had his vision set on assuming Mr. Kingsland’s position at one time or another, because he loved being in Dartmouth,” she noted. “So he went off to pursue other opportunities to prepare himself to assume that position.”

“You have big shoes to fill,” noted more than one committee member as they welcomed Flint back to the district and offered their congratulations.

“As everyone said, big shoes to fill for sure,” noted committee chair Kathleen Amaral. “But referencing your experience, and the collective excitement to have you back, we’re looking forward to what you can accomplish with our students.”

“Welcome aboard,” said committee vice chair Chris Oliver. “We’re happy to have you.”
