Have a heart: Organization goes green to raise funds for food distribution

Feb 4, 2021

Dartmouth residents may start seeing some green among the snow.

To combat food insecurity in the area amid the pandemic, mutual aid group Dartmouth United Outreach is selling lawn signs containing a green heart with a simple message for these times: hope.

According to coordinator Lyn Dillies, the idea to get the green signs was inspired by a similar movement in nearby Westport.

She noted that since December, residents have been posting signs on their front lawns that show a solid red heart on it with no words to support the Westport Food Pantry.

“At first you’d see just a few of the signs, but it really caught on around town,” Dillies said. “It’s really just a way to spread the love.”

After seeing just how prevalent they were, she knew her group had to spread a similar message here in Dartmouth to raise money toward buying food to deliver to those in need.

“And that’s really our M.O. — to provide hope to people,” she said.

Dyllies noted that since March, the group has been making between 400 to 600 food deliveries per week to the town’s senior living complexes or other families in need.

Along with the deliveries, the group also hosts weekly “grab and go” events at the Smith Mills Church.

“It’s really cranking,” she laughed. “We’ll be there as long as [people] need us.”

Signs are currently available at Farm & Coast Market or at the Smith Mills Church. Suggested donation is $10.
