High school sports teams gearing up for spring season

Mar 20, 2018

Despite fields still covered in snow, spring sports are now in full swing. Dartmouth Week talked to varsity coaches about their goals and expectations for the season on the first day of tryouts on March 19.

Softball

With a full roster of returning players, head coach Beth Arguin said she’s looking forward to making the tournament again. Pitcher Sophia Sousa will make a return to the team after suffering a shoulder injury last season, although it is uncertain if she will start on the mound immediately. This year the team will focus on improving base running.

Baseball

Head Coach Michael Frates hopes to qualify for the postseason again this year. Last season, the team qualified with a 9-11 record but lost to Dighton-Rehoboth in the first round. This season’s team is shaping up to be a young one dominated by sophomores, with only six seniors trying out. Frates said everything will need improvement, specifically pitching depth and offense. He will rely on captains Brett Abreu, Eric Sylva and Ben Aaronson for their skills and leadership.

Boys Tennis

The boys tennis team is coming off a strong season last year. Head Coach Donald York has strong players returning for the season, including Kyle Nosworthy, Sean Manny, and Trevor Schwartsman. Schwartsman, a singles player, was one win away from being the Boston Globe Player of the Year - an individual goal York has set for him this season. York is pushing the team to get stronger, and hopes to make tournament and advance several rounds, if not a complete sweep.

Girls Tennis

Head Coach Steve Charest’s top objective this season is getting to the tournament and getting past the first round, a feat that’s been difficult for the past few years. Last year, injuries required position swaps, but helped athletes further their experience. With only three seniors this year, York still feels confident.

Boys Lacrosse

After losing Cole Jacobson due to a mid-season injury and graduation, Head Coach Peter Crane hopes his team makes a comeback and qualifies for the tournament. This year is all about communication amongst the young team, with a good mix of returning players from each grade level. Among them is Will Cody, Tyler Jacobson, Logan Bosworth, Angelo Nicolosi, Charlie Gamache and Dane Ashton.

Girls Lacrosse

After last season’s 9-9-1 record and quarterfinal loss to Medway High, Head Coach Christopher Treca hopes to return to postseason play with team and individual improvement. There are a fair number of returning players, including senior captain Megan Belmonte, a top four scorer from last season, and three other senior captains, Abbey Clark, Emily Isaacs and Dot Kiley. Senior goalie Olivia Chesney and sophomores Sofia Reardon and Ava Garcia are also back. Tresca anticipates improving defense, as simply out-scoring won’t cut it.

Boys and girls track

The girls were league championships this past winter, and the boys won its championship both this past winter and last spring. Head Coach Head Coach Caitlin McCarron-Deely doesn’t see any major items to focus on, and is instead working with athletes to improve overall performance. Athletes worth keeping an eye on include Isaac Sequiera, Brandon McNeil, Charlotte Correiro and Beatriz Mazo.
