High winds and heavy rain close Padanaram Bridge, down power lines and flood several roads

Dec 18, 2023

High winds and heavy rain greeted Dartmouth residents Monday morning, as a storm front hits coastal Massachusetts. The Padanaram Bridge is closed until further notice due to high winds and waves splashing onto the roadway.

Sections of several roads are closed due to flooding, including Horseneck Road, Smith Neck Road, Potomska Road and Lucy Little Road, said Director of Public Works Tim Barber. Trees and tree limbs throughout Dartmouth are seeing damage, which has translated to power outages throughout Dartmouth. A large tree fell across Alden Avenue, near UMass Dartmouth; another shattered tree near Dartmouth Orchards took down a powerline for hours.

Harbormaster Steve Melo said a storm like this one comes through every year around this time: “It’s worse than the hurricane season.”

Melo said the harbor is tying boats down at the moment trying to “preempt” any damage, but none has been reported so far. The bridge will likely be closed for the next few hours, if not longer.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning until 7 p.m. and a coastal flood advisory until 2 p.m.

The Department of Public Works recommends staying off the roads if possible, and reminds drivers to stay clear of flooded roadways, as a few cars have gotten stuck while wading through.

Eversource reported multiple outages in the morning: one on Allen Street, just past Slocum Road and one on the Dartmouth side of Bliss Corner, both affecting around 1,400 residents. Both were caused by tree limbs knocking down wires.

Around 1,000 residents on Fisher Road also experienced an outage, along with another 200 residents near Destruction Brook Woods. Several small outages are affected Hixville residents, and around 150 residents near Gaffney and Potomska Road lost power.
