Hydrant flushing may result in discolored water
The Dartmouth Water Department will be flushing water mains from April 26 to May 27 from 4 to 8 p.m.
The object of flushing is to move water through the water mains at a high speed in order to loosen and remove deposits of iron and manganese that build up inside the pipe. Flushing disturbs sediment and can result in temporarily discolored water.
The water department recommends that residents avoid doing laundry and drawing hot water when water appears discolored due to flushing. After 8 p.m., if water appears discolored, let the water run until it clears.
At times homeowners will experience reduced water pressure during flushing operations due to water being diverted to the hydrants. This is a temporary condition.
If water pressure does not return to normal after 8 p.m., notify the water department at (508) 999-0742. Contact Steven M. Sullivan, Water and Sewer Superintendent, with any questions.
