Kids stack up the fun at Lego Club
A battle scene, a jail, a motorcycle, and a barbeque are among the creations Children’s Librarian Christie Phillips has seen since running the Lego Club throughout the month of July at the Southworth Library.
Supplying the Legos for free, kids could come Tuesdays to bring their imagination to life and make new friends.
Phillips said she tried out the program a few years ago, but it wasn’t popular. However, after reviving it per the request of a young boy, she said she’s seen a lot of kids over the month.
“It’s good for them to just free play — see what they create and come up with,” Phillips added. “I’m always surprised by things I see.”
Varenya Challa, 7, was hard at work on her “barbeque.” A small yellow police officer manned the grill while she picked out the pieces for a swimming pool.
She said she likes Legos because “I like to build a lot of things with it.”
Though it was her and brother’s first time at Lego Club, their mom, Sucharita Challa, mentioned how the family participated in a prior Lego event that required the kids to build designs just based on a picture and under a time constraint.
“Looking at all the children and what they imagined and their imagination was wonderful,” Sucharita said. “I felt like they were geniuses.”
She highlighted how Legos provide an alternative creative outlet for her kids, being innovative and getting “engrossed” in their work.
“Lego Club is very encouraging for kids to have an open imagination and build whatever they like,” Sucharita said.
Saravana Challa, 5, was working on building a car when he said, “Legos are the funnest toys,” adding how he likes them “because they have little holes and they attach.”
When Jack Wolff Mitchell, 10, pulled out the instructions for a Mario Brothers Knex set, they continued to unfold until there was one big poster for him to follow.
It was his second time attending the club, but said, “I think it’s pretty cool. I like that you get to do a bunch of cool stuff.”
He added, “It’s awesome and some other people should totally join.”
The final Lego Club session will be held Tuesday, July 30 at 6 p.m. in the Southworth Library.
