Lady Liberty was at DeMello Elementary School on Thursday, June 1 for their first grade patriotic presentation.

Students like Evelyn Ferreria, who dressed as and presented on the Statue of Liberty, informed a crowd of parents and teachers what it means to be patriotic and the symbols that go with them.

“I hold a torch high over my head to welcome all that come to the United States, my torch is meant to shine a light on freedom,” Ferreria said.

Ferreria also shared details about how the statue got to America, “I was built in France and then tooken apart. I was shipped to America in 200 crates.”

Parents participated in saying the Pledge of Allegiance lead by Julian Rosonina, and heard from Theodore Roosevelt, who was played by Benjamin Ponte, Sally Ride, who was played by Piper Mota, Sacagawea, who was played by Amelie Philp and Abraham Lincoln.

Phoenix Tripp, who took on the role of Lincoln said, “some people did not like that I made slavery against the law, and I was assassinated in 1865 while I was visiting a theater.”

The presentation featured more than just famous speakers, students serenaded the audience with songs like, “America the Beautiful,” “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” and “You’re a Grand ‘ol Flag.”

Parents were impressed by the students’ performance of "This Land is Your Land" with choreography showing “California to the New York island” and “the redwood forest to the Gulf Stream waters” with hand motions of waves and trees.

Each little voice blended together to portray the unity the first grade at DeMello had and the unity of America.

Adam Hill, assistant principal of DeMello said he was blown away by the first grade students' salute to America through their presentation.

“What an exceptional job [the first graders] did,” said Hill. “ And what a wonderful wonderful turnout, thank you all.”
