Mobil drive-through plan raises safety, traffic concerns

Jul 13, 2021

A proposed drive-thru lane at the Mobil station at 155 Faunce Corner Mall Road drew concerns about pedestrian safety and traffic impact July 12 from members of the Planning Board.

Owners of the Mobil station want to “expand the services they provide,’’ said Steve Gioiosa, an engineer from SITEC Engineering. The station now has a convenience store in addition to gas pumps.

A previous Honey Dew location at the site “didn’t do well,’’ he said, because there was no drive-thru.

Board Chair Kevin Melo raised concerns about people at the gas pumps “opening up their car doors and stepping into traffic.’’

“My biggest problem with the plans is that it requires pedestrian traffic in front of a drive-thru lane,’’ board member Christopher O’Neil said. “That makes me a little hesitant — that makes me a lot hesitant.’’

Gioiosa said rumble strips were proposed to ease safety concerns by signaling to drivers to be particularly cautious.

Board member Steve Taylor suggested adding bollards, short posts that are used to divert traffic. Having both bollards and rumble strips, he said, should “make it crystal clear even to the dumbest’’ of drivers to be aware of the pumps.

Traffic impact from a drive-through was a concern for board member Kevin Estes.

“There’s going to be new traffic added to the mix,’’ he said. “I’m anticipating a lot of people going north crossing lanes of traffic’’ to access the lane.

Gioiosa said that the board raised “good questions’’ that he would bring to the site owner for discussion to reach a “higher level of comfort’’ with the project.
