Number of complaints against Terry’s Travel rises
The Dartmouth Police Department confirmed this week that the number of complaints logged against Terry’s Travel has grown to 71. Detective Kyle Costa estimates the total amount of money owed to the various customers is about $220,000.
Earlier this summer, the police had received 60 complaints with an estimated amount of $190,000 owed to former clients.
Allegations that Natercia Sousa, the president of the travel agency, took money from clients and did not book reservations began in late July after an Acushnet couple, Kristine Mello and Jeffrey Ferreira, went public with their story of being swindled by the company.
The couple and 45 of their friends and family booked a destination wedding in Mexico and collectively spent about $70,000.
The family had received a confirmation of a $200 deposit on the trip from Sousa, but each family member had spent around $1,500. The wedding party did not hear from Sousa after paying for the trip.
Costa said back in August that the business, which was located on 6A Hathaway Road has since been shut down.
He said the department is currently reserving comment while Attorney General Maura Healey’s office is investigating the matter.
The attorney general’s office received the first complaint regarding Terry’s Travel back in December 2014. By August, the office had received more than 30 complaints. Maura Healey’s office started communicating with the Dartmouth Police Department regarding the cases in early August.
The police department then called for any additional customers affected by the agency file complaints with the agency. Costa said that complaints have since stopped.
“We’re trying to tell people to be patient because these things don’t resolve themselves overnight,” said Costa.
He said that one such investigation can be a time consuming affair, so more than 70 will take some time.
