One race contested in State Primaries Sept. 3
Dartmouth voters will see one contested race in the upcoming primary election on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Two candidates will compete in the Democratic primary for the 2nd Bristol and Plymouth Seat.
The seat is currently held by long-time senator, Mark C. Montigny, who is seeking reelection.
Montigny, a New Bedford resident, took office in 1993, serving 16 terms, which have only been contested twice — both unsuccessfully. He has served as an assistant majority leader and chairman of the Committee on Rules.
One of Montigny’s recent accomplishments was helping get a “historic” affordable housing bill to the governor. With this legislation, dubbed the Affordable Homes Act, over $5 billion in state bond obligations would be authorized for housing development and improvements across the state, including $500,000 for the Partners in Housing Mendes-Monteiro Housing project on Anderson Way in Dartmouth.
First-time candidate Molly Kivi, also from New Bedford, will be seeking the Democratic nomination as well.
Kivi is a lifelong resident of Massachusetts and UMass Dartmouth alumni, having studied accountancy.
Her background is in nonprofit, government and private accounting, and she said she is “ready to make laws that work for everyone — not a select few — and collaborate in creating a state budget constituents will be proud of.”
The last day to register to vote and to change party enrollment for the state primary is Saturday, Aug. 24. That day is also the first day of in-person early voting for the state primary at Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will continue to be held Aug. 26 to 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Voting on the day of the state primaries, Tuesday, Sept. 3, will take place from 7 a.m. at 8 p.m. With no Republican candidate, this primary will determine who takes the seat.
