Opinion: Food insecurity in college students

Mar 19, 2025
To the editor,

My name is Maelen Alexander and I am a nursing student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I am writing to you because 44% of college students are experiencing food insecurity. Although I’ve never known one of these students personally, it is still a significant concern. As a future nurse I care about the health of my community and it is upsetting to know that there is not enough being done to support these students. Due to this the students are much more likely to not graduate because they have to decide between education and survival necessities. At University of Massachusetts Dartmouth we have a food pantry, Jeanne’s Cupboard where students can go if they are experiencing trouble with food insecurity. Myself and the MASSPIRG team are hoping that you will help us in spreading awareness. Our goal is to get $2M in funding in the FY26 state budget for the Hunger Free Campus Initiative. We could use your support by informing your legislator so they can pass the Hunger Free Campus Bill which will set up the infrastructure for the program. We hope that you will join us in this journey to end food insecurity among college students.

Sincerely,
Maelen Alexander (Volunteer for MASSPIRG)
