Opinion: Regarding potential scamming through solicitation

Jul 29, 2024

To the editor:

This afternoon, two individuals wearing shirts with the company name Sunrun on them came to my front door.

Not knowing if they were door-to-door salesmen or scammers, I asked them to leave my property.

They did so eventually, but only after informing me they were "going to report me to the town.”

My Ring camera recorded this.

Subsequently, I contacted the Dartmouth Police Department to inquire about any possible similar incidents.

I was put on hold while they checked their records and was told that that company did have a permit to solicit.

I asked if they (or the town) were required to notify people in advance of their attempt to solicit business.

I was told that there was no prior requirement.

I was told I could fill out a form at the DPD to request no solicitations, which I will do.

In this era of people being frequently targeted for various scams, one would think that there is more that the town could do to help prevent these types of potential scams.

Requiring prior notification of a solicitation, having the individuals doing the solicitation being required to have town issued person specific identification, and the screening of those individuals for any criminal history do not seem unreasonable to me.

Why are we not providing better protection for our residents?

Sincerely,

William Nesse
