Opinion: South Dartmouth has a trash problem

Aug 12, 2024
To the editor:

As a four-year resident of South Dartmouth, I absolutely love the area — beaches, local restaurants, seafood, the Padanarm area and close proximity to the water!

There's only one MAJOR issue: trash!

It seems that local residents have no problem throwing out Dunkin donuts plastic and paper cups, McDonalds cups, water bottles, diapers, KFC packages, etc, etc, etc!! The 3 biggest business offenders who NEVER police their parking areas are Walgreens, Webster Bank and Dollar General!  Their lots are the worst!

I regularly walk around my block and fill a 10-gallon trash bag with no problem. It seems some residents who drive down to SolarMar complex think the street is their personal trash dump!

This doesn't even mention the inconsiderate dog owners who leave their dogs waste on the path, which I believe is a law violation!

Come on people, pick up your trash!

Why ruin this beautiful area?  What is the Towns response to this? I have NEVER seen a public works truck performing a trash detail or organizing a town wide trash pickup day! We can and should do better!

Sincerely,
