Photography duo finds beauty outside the studio

Oct 7, 2015

In a place as scenic as the South Coast area, long-time couple Kim Bancroft and Adam Graves of K&A Photography run their business anywhere but in a studio.

From weddings to family portraits and even live music, the ever-adaptable K&A Photography boasts beautiful, dynamic shots that capture the essence of their subjects.

While the couple is based in Padanaram, the vast majority of their work is done on location so they won’t feel the constraints of a studio space.

“You have to evolve with the business, [but] the majority of photography… is on location, outdoors, in a farm field or in an urban setting. It’s not the laser backdrops we had in fifth grade,” Graves said.

Not being tied down to a studio space has opened up a world of possibilities for the duo.

“I think that’s why we love it so much. We’re always out going somewhere, meeting new people. We’re not stuck in a cubicle – and we don’t want to be. That’s why we’re doing this,” Bancroft said.

Bancroft, a Dartmouth native, and Graves, hailing from Wisconsin, met while attending college in Colorado. After seven years together, the two decided to pursue their shared hobby of photography and make it into a full-time job.

“You find something you love doing, you never have to work a day in your life,” Graves said. “So it’s always been a true passion of ours.”

They’ve been operating as K&A Photography since 2013, though they’ve been photographing weddings for about five years. The business itself has been coming together as an organized operation in the last five months.

“We’ve gotten really good response[s] from everything that we’ve done,” Bancroft said.

She said an example of their good feedback came from a recent wedding they photographed. Bancroft was concerned that the couple didn’t like their photos after not hearing from them for a few days. As it turns out, the couple was so enamored with their photos, they would break down in tears every time they looked through the photo album.

“It’s so gratifying to, through your work, give something that is that important to them,” Bancroft said.

Graves, a landscape photographer, displays his work at Norton Gallery where Bancroft works. He’s been making a name for himself as an independent photographer as well.

Bancroft handles much of the administrative side of K&A, but both shoot and assist each other while covering weddings and events.

“The great thing about us over other people is we always have two shooters,” Bancroft said. ”We’ve been dating for seven years, we pretty much read each other’s thoughts. We don’t have to talk to each other to know what’s going on.”
