Planning Board debates proposed Dunkin’ drive-thru

May 11, 2020

A proposed Dunkin’ on 479 Faunce Corner Road is once again seeking approval from the Planning Board for a drive-thru.

The project developer is seeking to build a “concept” Dunkin’ with multiple drive-thru lanes, including a lane specifically designated for online app order pick-ups.

The drive-thru project was the only article to fail at last year’s June Town Meeting.

The developer had been granted a variance to the town’s zoning bylaws that prevent drive-thrus on Faunce Corner Road. According to attorney Mark Bobrowski, his client received a special permit for a conventional office-industrial district restaurant, along with a special use variance from the Zoning Board.

Planning Board member John Sousa had concerns about what kind of conflicts could emerge with multiple people using multiple lanes, such as road rage.

“There has to be a pinch point,” he said.

According to architect Peter Van Erp, the Dunkin app has what he said is “a little traffic light” that instructs drivers who order mobile when it is their turn to pull forward, even while others use the standard lanes.

“Dunkin is looking for you,” he joked.

Project engineer Larry Silva added that the drive-thru would be one of many options, including pedestrian connections from other lots and a bike rack. He added there would be an additional bypass lane for those not using the drive-thru.

Ultimately, the Planning Board voted to place the proposal under further review until all of their design standards are met such as placement of menu boards and pickup windows, along with stacking spaces for cars.

The Planning Board is scheduled to meet with the Department of Public Works on May 18.
