Shellfishing resumes off Smith Neck Road

Jul 26, 2021

After a couple of years, Dartmouth families can once again — with a permit — dig for quahogs along the beach on Smith Neck Road.

At a July 26 Select Board meeting, Harbormaster Steve Melo noted that after going through “regulatory gymnastics” from the state’s Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, residents can again harvest shellfish on the beach.

“We’ll be vigilant and doing what we have to do to keep these areas open during the summer season,” Melo said.

Shellfishing is currently limited to Wednesday through Saturday. For Dartmouth residents, a recreational permit costs $25. Permits can be acquired at Town Hall.
