Touchdown for tech: Dartmouth High athletics sees digital improvements this season

Aug 31, 2024

Despite overall enrollment at Dartmouth High School decreasing, Athletic Director Andrew Crisafulli said participation in sports has remained proportionately the same.

“It's a good indication of the health of a department,” Crisafulli said, adding how the department will see the introduction of a few new technology features this fall.

Soon the school will be pivoting to digital ticketing for admission to its games, starting with football this fall, according to Crisafulli.

Additionally, the department is receiving National Federation of High School Sports cameras, which will be installed at the Carlin Lynch Activity Center and Dartmouth Memorial Stadium. He said this will allow teams to live stream their games to any community members subscribed to the federation’s network.

“They are new initiatives this year, so I know that there's going to be a little bit of a learning curve, and hopefully the timing aligns with our needs, but we're excited,” he added.

Though participation has remained the same, Crisafulli said the department has had to get “creative” with the makeup of its sub varsity teams, especially when there are not enough freshman players.

For example, he pointed out the soccer teams, which are looking to have a second junior varsity team in addition to its varsity, which would take the place of a freshman team.

“We're going to add six games to our [junior varsity] schedule, and then we're going to split it between the two, so for each team, the goal will be to play at least 12 games a piece,” he said. However, this will also depend on injuries and how the length of the rosters later in the season.

The 2023-24 athletic season was a “tremendous” success, according to Crisafulli, who said every team made it to the state tournament, “which is extremely uncommon.”

He added, “We finished in the top three of most successful Division Two athletic programs in the whole state of Massachusetts,” he added. “That was last year, so we're going to do our very best to sustain that level of success while growing our student athletes and programs.”
