Town exploring municipal broadband

Jul 12, 2021

Town-run Internet could be coming to Dartmouth.

The Select Board took its first steps toward that possibility on July 12 after members unanimously voted to create a Municipal Broadband Network Advisory Committee.

Members will be tasked with evaluating market demand and models for internet service delivery for the town’s residents.

“Basically, they’re tasked with seeing if it’s a viable alternative for the town to provide its own municipal broadband network,” Town Administrator Shawn MacInnes said.

The board will consist of seven members including the town’s Director of Development, Information Technology Director, Director of Community Media, and four members of the community appointed by the Select Board.

MacInnes noted that the town of Fairhaven is currently attempting something similar.

According to the town administrator, this committee “will be completely separate” from the town’s Comcast Advisory Committee — which will review the franchise agreement contract with the internet service provider.

The Comcast Committee, MacInness said, “is being put together soon as well.”
