Tree crashes into home on Evelyn Street

Aug 22, 2021

Life was quiet Sunday morning on Evelyn Street until about 10:30 a.m., when Mary Beckwith heard a thud.

The two trunks of an old oak tree in her neighbor’s yard at 47 Evelyn St. had split by the force of the wind.

A portion of the tree went through the roof and crashed into a second floor bedroom.

No one was hurt, she said, but the outcome could have been much more serious. The homeowner’s daughter who normally stays in the bedroom where the tree landed left for college the day before, Beckwith said, and the owner had just returned from her regular walk around nearby Buttonwood Park.

The second portion fell onto the dead end street, blocking traffic until crews could remove it.

“It was quite something to see,” she said.

The crash caused the neighborhood to lose power for a few hours, she said.

The tree has caused issues before, Beckwith said.

During a summer storm about 13 years ago, the third trunk of the tree snapped, flattening a car in the Beckwirth driveway.

The current owner, who bought the house after that incident, was told the tree was solid, Beckwith said.

A tree at another neighbor’s house fell during a March storm, she said, blocking the road for a few days and causing power outage that lasted for days, she said. “And it was cold then,” she said.

This time, she said, the utility response was much better, with power and traffic restored within hours instead of days.

Evelyn Street straddles the boundary of New Bedford and Dartmouth, with homes on the street’s western end located in Dartmouth and the eastern end in New Bedford.
