Knights of Columbus beautifies war memorials
While driving around town this week, you may notice that Dartmouth’s war memorials look more polished than usual. That’s because members of the Knights of Columbus decided to get together and spruce them up before Veterans Day.
“We’re going around to all the different memorials – there’s 14 in Dartmouth. After the summer, when fall sets in, they get a little disheveled,” said Deputy Grand Knight Sean Jackman. “A lot of these vets are from World War I. Their families are gone. We want to respect their memory and make sure the memorials look presentable.”
About a dozen members from the Knights of Columbus gathered in front of town hall on Saturday to begin their trip around town. They brought rakes, mulch, weed whackers and a willingness to get on their hands and knees and scrub the stone statues.
The group’s itinerary for the day included a trip to town hall, the middle school, the police station, Russells Mills Village and beyond.
Dartmouth’s Knights of Columbus group represents two parishes, St. Julie Billiard Parish and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
“The Knights of Columbus is a global fraternal organization. It’s Catholic-based community of gentlemen that get together and help out with the community,” said Jackman.
“We’re a religion-based organization, but we’re really focused on charitable works. Helping individuals that are down and out in the community,” he said.
The Knights also help out veterans and their memory, he added.
Veterans Day is on Wednesday, Nov. 11 this year.
