Jeff Costa victorious in Fire District No. 1 election

Apr 26, 2016

The Dartmouth Fire District No. 1 seat vacated by Marcel Dumont was filled on Monday, April 25, by Jeff Costa, who won the seat in the district's election with 54 percent of the total vote.

Joe Vieira and Troy DeCouto were also vying for the seat. A total 331 votes were cast. Costa garnered 179 votes, compared to Vieira's 129 and DeCouto's 23.

Costa said he is happy to be on the Prudential Committee and will be working to "keep everyone motivated," tighten up training for fire fighters, and keep everyone in good health.

Costa has been involved with the fire district in various capacities, from firefighter to acting fire chief, for the past 24 years.

Vieira could not be reached for comment.

DeCouto was disheartened by the negativity he was faced with during his campaign, but said he is excited to see what Costa will be able to accomplish during his term on the Prudential Committee.

Elsewhere in the election, incumbent Alfred DeMello ran unopposed for Board of Auditors and earned 250 votes.

"I was just glad to be running again," DeMello said, noting that he looks forward to continuing his service to Fire District No.1

In November, DeMello will have been with the fire district for 24 years, serving as a firefighter and the District No. 1 delegate for Massachusetts Call Volunteer Association.
