Dartmouth High Athletic Hall of Fame takes inductees down memory lane

Dartmouth High School’s class of 2016 may be ready to move forward, but on May 13, 11 alumni walked down memory lane for their induction into the high school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

The two-hour ceremony at Rachel’s Lakeside in Westport was packed to honor inductees, including class of 1977’s John Ingham.

“A very warm feeling came over me,” said the former football captain when his coach, Carlin Lynch, called to let him know he’d been nominated. “It was wonderful to hear his voice again,” said Ingham.

To qualify, nominees must have graduated from Dartmouth High no earlier than 10 years ago, completed a whole two years at the school, and participated in varsity athletics. Coaches were also eligible, but qualified by teaching a single sport for a minimum of seven years, or multiple sports for at least four years.

Though nearly four decades separate Ingham from his senior year, he said he’s still the same person. “But with far more experience.”

Dartmouth basketball star Timothy Gaspar, ‘99, and his sister Sara were both inducted this year. Sara was inducted alongside the entire 2004-2005 girls basketball state champion team.

Though 17 years have passed, Gaspar carries his high school experience with him. “You learn a lot from sports that you can apply off the court,” he said.

Inductee Bob Hayes spent 27 years coaching hockey and teaching young men about working hard, but juggling that past-time alongside coaching volleyball for seven years and softball for five years, Hayes himself admits he learned how to hustle from his students.

“You do it one season at a time,” Hayes said. “I certainly had to work hard.”

Inductee Roanne Gregory, ‘95, said the ceremony was a “fun window” for her eight-year-old daughter, Nora, to look through. Sports were a big part of Gregory’s childhood. “I learned to believe in my own body and really trust in myself,” Gregory said.

Since her days as a track champion and soccer star, Gregory has slowed down quite a bit. As an elementary school botany teacher and an art enthusiast, she said she’s come to appreciate the more mellow side of life.

The complete list of the 2016 Dartmouth High Athletic Hall of Fame inductees include: Jeffrey Schoening ('71), John Ingham ('77), Marlon Burns ('80), Bill Peterson ('86), Roanne Gregory ('95), Maureen Halstead ('98), Timothy Gaspar ('99), Cory Catelli ('03), the Boys Indoor Track 1970-1971 state champions, the Girls Basketball 2004-2005 state champions, and coach Bob Hayes.
