District No. 2 firefighter gets $8,000 salary increase
The Prudential Committee for Dartmouth Fire District No. 2 hashed out final details for the district's fiscal year 2017 budget, which begins July 1.
Committee members Ralph Medeiros and Bernard Giroux voted to enact an increase to the full-time firefighter wage, as approved by voters at the district's annual meeting in May.
Kenneth Gidley, the district's sole full-time firefighter—aside from Fire Chief Tim Andre—will receive a salary of $53,000 starting July 1, 2016. The benefits package will stay the same, and he will not be getting a two-percent raise.
The sum will come out of the tax levy, as voted upon in May, when voters fought to increase the firefighter's salary by nearly $8,000.
“My opinion is that firefighters have a value that has no price,” said Giroux, who voted for the salary increase at the annual meeting.
Medeiros was not in favor of the change at the annual meeting, but sided with Giroux this time around. The third committee member seat is currently vacant.
Though voters wanted to increase the salary, the change was not necessarily a given. It only set the ceiling for how much the Prudential Committee could spend, said Attorney Anthony Savastano.
The committee also held an executive session meeting (closed to the public) to discuss the renewal of Andre's contract as fire chief. Details have not yet been released.
