Temporary dog park set to open in near future
Visitors to the Dartmouth Regional Park & Trails may noticed a newly fenced off area soon, as the town’s dog park advocates plan to set up a temporary canine play area.
The Dartmouth Dog Advisory Work Group (DDAWG) finished raising funds for the fencing last year and would have had it opened already, but due to construction and weather delays, the temporary dog park will go up this year instead, said DDAWG president Diane Camacho.
The temporary park will serve dog owners as construction of a larger park in the same area continues, Camacho said. Fencing will separate the half-acre temporary park, which will include signage with park rules and a receptacle for dog waste, said Camacho. The group intends the larger park to be about 12 acres.
The committee will narrow down a specific time to set up the fencing and officially open the temporary park as the weather clears and the snow dissipates, Camacho said.
Established in 2009, DDAWG stemmed from a small group of residents who desired a safe place to walk their pets. After approaching the town with the request, the Parks and Recreation Department examined its properties, and gave the okay to build a park at the 443 Old Fall River Road site in July 2012.
The site is unusable by the department due to elevation changes, heavy tree coverage, and its close proximity to wetlands. The group has had to design a park around those issues, and is currently working to clear trees and stumps from the location.
DDAWG is also began working with the Building Committee in early 2015, as the property will include a storage shed, fencing, and drainage ditch.
In the meantime, the group runs fundraisers through Yankee Candle and Amazon. It is also planning a magic show to raise funds, details of which will be announced as the event draws near.
