DeMello School promotes reading with door decorating contest

Apr 5, 2017

In an effort to promote reading, DeMello Elementary staff held a door decorating contest between classes.

Students decorated their classroom doors based on their favorite book. Volunteer judges from the community rated the displays based on creativity and visual appeal.

Sharon Oliveira's first grade class won the competition with their Rainbow Fish decorations, which included watercolored and sequined fish.

Other contestants included students' class photos in hot air balloons, inspired by Dr. Seuss' "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"; a ship with students' heads pasted to pirates' bodies, inspired by the book "The Unintentional Adventures of the Bland Sisters," by Kara LaReau; and squirrels picnicking with Lays chips, inspired by Adam Rubin's "Those Darn Squirrels!"
