South Coast girl group to release first single, music video
Dartmouth High sophomore Jackie Ferreira will tour with Aaron Carter this summer. Yes, the '90s, pre-teen, pop star Aaron Carter... except now, he's all grown up.
Ferreira, 16, along with South Coast residents Tori Kalisz, 15, and Olivia Nunes, 17, will tour as the girl group Sequence this August. The Philadelphia and New York stops with Carter mark the girls' first national tour.
The three met through Rochester-based nonprofit Voices in Time, which teaches singing and choreography to five- to 18-year-olds, and gives back to the community with more than 50 performances each year, according to its Facebook page.
Although Ferreira has been a Voices in Time participant for the past eight years, she's performed as part of Sequence for nearly three.
"One season, [Vocal Coach Sharon Jensen] came up to us and formed us together, and here we are," said Ferreira. Through Jensen's connections, the girls were able to land a spot in the tour.
"The event organizer contacted Sharon Jensen. It's the right age. The right demographic. [The girls] are spreading the right message," said Marlene Kalisz, Tori's mom and Nunes' aunt.
Through Jensen's organization, the girls have not only improved harmonizing together, but also mastered important social skills.
"It's also taught us to give back to the community and use our talents as a team," said Ferreira. The girls have performed at fundraisers like the Run to Remember 5K and the Special Olympics, as well as at sporting events, nursing homes, and festivals including New Bedford's AHA! Night.
"Most recently, at Miss Inspirational, we volunteered to help the contestants get ready," Ferreira added.
The girls said that balancing community service, budding fame, and high school isn't always easy, but it's worth the time and effort.
"We have regular responsibilities as a teenager, but it doesn't feel like a job. We have so much fun," said Nunes.
"It all comes back to time management and having a nice routine. There are times when we're coming back from a show, and I'm doing my homework in the back of the van with everyone else," added Ferreira.
But the teenagers can't ignore the milestones in front of them. Sequence will sing the "National Anthem" at the July 3 Pawtucket Red Sox game, will perform at the Northeast Youth Music and Arts Festival on September 10, and, of course, there's bragging rights to opening the Summer Nights Tour for headliner Aaron Carter.
"'I Want Candy' was definitely one of my favorite songs as a kid," Kalisz said. "He's definitely making a comeback right now. It will be a cool experience to tour with him."
Additionally, their first single, "All the time," will be released on June 15. The accompanying music video will be released during a premiere party at Striker's Sports Bar & Grill (66 Hathaway Road, New Bedford) on June 17, 2-4 p.m.
"Not a lot of teenagers can say they have an original on iTunes. It's one of those experiences you can't take for granted," said Ferreira. The girls are quick to share their stardom with friends, however.
"A lot of our friends were [in the music video.] We had bubbles going on, and lights," said Kalisz.
