More than 20 University of Massachusetts Dartmouth students will need to be relocated after a burst water pipe caused damage to a university dormitory.

According to scanner traffic, Dartmouth Fire District No. 3 and university Department of Public Safety officers responded to Cedar Dell South suite 568 at around 3:30 p.m. for a fire alarm.

Once on scene, crews discovered a hot water pipe in the second floor bathroom had burst, flooding the suite and damaging multiple smoke detectors and the building’s fire alarm system, according to scanner reports.

University housing is working to relocate 23 students, according to scanner traffic. It is unclear if the students were living in the building at the time, or if they were away on winter break.

Cedar Dell is the university’s townhouse-style apartment dormitories for upperclassmen. Each suite contains a living area, kitchen, and six bedrooms. Multiple suites are connected to a single building.

Most residential students are not currently living on campus as students are out on winter break. Students will return to campus on January 21.
