By popular demand – Young Naturalist Programs will run 5 days a week!

Join the Lloyd Center for an exciting summer outdoors! Coastal Studies Programs for children and teens entering grades 3 through 8, and Young Naturalist Programs for children ages five through seven. In its 37th season, the Lloyd Center’s Summer Programs are designed to give motivated students an opportunity to explore different aspects of environmental science.

Coastal Studies Programs for students entering grades 3-8

Animal collection, habitat investigations, and fishing are just a few of the activities offered through the 2018 Summer Programs. All sessions include field study, laboratory work, and fun!

Eureka (4th – 6th grades), July 9th – July 13^th, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Play with science!? Participate in experiments that are as much fun as they are educational. Discover the secrets of magnetism. Learn to make a bizarre substance called “oobleck”.  Become a mad scientist and uncover the science in the world around you!

Freshwater Wetlands (3rd – 5th grades), July 23rd – July 27^th, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Come get wet and muddy as we explore the area’s ponds, marshes and vernal pools. Wading into these unique environments, you will discover fascinating plants and cool critters. This is a hands-on adventure as we collect and observe creatures of these important habitats!

Marine Biology (6th – 8th grades), August 6th – August 10^th, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Come join us as we explore the lush local estuarine and beach ecosystems! Collect live animals from the ocean while beachcombing. Observe various adaptations coastal organisms use to survive and thrive. First-hand observation of creatures and marine fun make this program great!

Tidal Surge: The Ocean and Climate Change (3rd – 5th Grades), August 13th – August 17^th, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Passionate about the ocean and its creatures? Join us for a saltwater-drenched week of field trips, animal encounters, experiments, and more. Discover the ways in which climate change can affect local coastal habitats… and become part of the solution!

The Young Naturalist Programs at the Lloyd Center are a way for children ages five through seven to enjoy a fun-filled summer of exploration, discovery and wonder of the natural world around them. Throughout the summer, children will learn about the amazing creatures and habitats around the Lloyd Center using hands-on games, activities, crafts and trail walks. Whether looking in the sea, sky, forests or ponds, we will be sure to have an exciting day experiencing the remarkable things in the world around us. Children may participate in a half-day session or extend their fun into a full-day adventure. Each session of the summer will incorporate new activities and crafts, so feel free to sign up your child for as many programs as you like!

Under the Sea
Learn about the fun and amazing creatures that live in the oceans. Throughout each session we will explore this salt water habitat and discover the incredible ways that animals survive underwater. Trips to the touch tank, estuary and live animal encounters will help us to explore this amazing underwater environment.

In the Sky
Join us as we discover what is happening in the sky. Explore the world of winged creatures and get our heads in the clouds as we find out about all of the amazing things happening above our heads. Throughout the summer we will explore how animals fly, why it rains and learn where rainbows come from through exciting experiments and games.

Forest Frenzy
Have you taken time to explore the forest? This habitat is home to some amazing creatures like snakes, turtles, mammal and birds. Become a nature detective, use scavenger hunts and search for clues these animals leave behind while learning about our creepy, crawly, furry and scaly friends in the forest!

Ponds & Streams
Have you ever taken the time to explore the freshwater ponds and streams around your houses? This summer, put on your boots and dive into these freshwater habitats. We will learn all about the animals that call the ponds and streams their home, catch these critters in nets and find out how they spend their days in the water.

Eureka Fridays!
Fridays are even more fun with our new Eureka Fridays! program. We will engage in exciting and educational science experiments that will have you saying Eureka!

Programs run Mondays – Fridays from June 25th – August 17th.  Each morning and afternoon session will be different.

Morning sessions: 9:30 am – Noon
Afternoon sessions: 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm

All Day Sessions available 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Each half day session (morning or afternoon):

Each full day session*
Members: $60   Non-members: $75

Members’ children and grandchildren under the age of 18 are eligible for discounted Member rates on Summer Programs.

*Early Bird Discount: $5 off each full day session and $10 off each full week session if you register before June 18th.  Inquire about sibling discounts.

Note: The Lunchtime Session is an exciting transition between programs.  Children will have time for lunch and engage in quieter, nature-themed stories and activities before the afternoon session begins.  Please provide your child with a brown bag lunch; refrigerator will be available for use.
