Town to begin water main flushing on April 23

Apr 16, 2018

The Dartmouth Water Department will begin water main flushing on April 23. Flushing will continue until June 28, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Flushing is performed to move water through the mains at a high speed to loosen and remove deposits of iron and manganese that build up inside the pipe.

As a consequence, flushing might result in temporary discoloration of the water due to disturbed sediment. It is recommended to avoid doing laundry and drawing hot water when water appears discolored due to flushing operations.

If water is still discolored after 11 p.m., the department recommends homeowners let the water run until it clears.

Flushing operations may also cause low water pressure. This is a temporary condition. If issues persist after 11 p.m., contact the department at (508) 999-0742.

A schedule of flushing locations and dates will be posted on the town’s website. Questions about the process should be directed to Steven M. Sullivan, Water and Sewer Superintendent.
