Families Set Sail to Cuttyhunk as Part of the Encompass Community Nature Program...

May 2, 2018

Children and families in the Encompass Community Nature Program were treated to an excursion aboard facilitator Seth Garfield's fishing boat on Monday, as they set sail for a tour of the Elizabeth Islands...

The group got an "inside view" of the town of Gosnold via Bobcat adventure vehicle, traversing hill and harbor, thicket and dune! They visited the church and one room school house on the island, explored ecosystems and lighthouse ruins, then helped to harvest oysters on Garfield's aquaculture farm. On the way back to Padanaram, they watched seals sunning themselves and got a lesson in action, taking turns to read the GPS and steer the boat.

Seth Garfield facilitates the Encompass Community Nature program every Monday and Wednesday on 65 acres at Friends Academy in Dartmouth, Ma. Scheduled drop-ins are available for the day at the rate of $40. Besides this Nature program for 6-14 year olds, they also offer Art and Science classes for this age group on Wednesday afternoons (only $10 per class). They offer Family Nature classes and playgroups for 3-6 year olds on Thursdays and free monthly events for whole families every month.

The Encompass Community is a grant-funded initiative of the Center for Education Innovation and a partnership with Friends Academy. The group offers enrichment and resources to homeschool families and life-long learners of all ages.
